When Should a First Visit Occur?
Your child's First Visit can be scheduled any time after your child’s teeth begin to erupt or by the age of one, whichever comes first. There are many advantages to starting dental visits early. Early visits allow children to become accustomed to the atmosphere of the dental office and learn what to expect during a checkup. Regular checkups starting at a young age also encourage the development of healthy oral habits that make dentistry visits later in life more pleasant. At the very latest, your child should get in to see a dentist by the age of three.
What to Expect at the First Checkup.
The first checkup should be a stress-free one. While there is always the possibility we will find decay and need to consider treatment options, an initial checkup with your little one usually involves us getting to know him or her and explaining what we will do during the visit. We’ll look inside the child’s mouth for signs of tooth decay and risk of oral disease.
Following the examination, we will discuss good oral health practices, such as proper brushing and flossing and eating a healthy diet. We may also recommend treatments such as fluoride if they are needed, and we will explain why we’re recommending them.
